The Evergreen Group has made an early start in its compliance with the International Ship and Port Facility Security Code (ISPS) for its fleet of over 100 container vessels with the 1164TEU Uni Active, owned by Evergreen International Storage & Transportation Corp, paving the way forward. Her International Ship Security Certificate (ISSC) was issued by China Corporation Register of Shipping (CR) in the Port of Keelung on 1 October, thus making her the first ROC-flag vessel to achieve compliance under the rigorous requirements of the Code.
The International Ship and Port Facility Security Code (ISPS) is set to become mandatory on 1 July 2004 and by then, Evergreen will have to navigate 103 ships through the certification process. To achieve its target of completing the process in May 2004, Evergreen is working closely with CR, with the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) and with the UK’s Maritime & Coastguard Agency.
Compliance with ISPS requires each vessel to have a trained ship security officer (SSO), a specific ship security plan (SSP) and security trained crew. The shipowning companies also need to appoint and train company security officers (CSOs) endorsed by the relevant flag state authority and her recognised security organisation (RSO).
Built in 1998, Uni Active is currently operating on Evergreen’s NSC service linking Bangkok, Laem Chabang, Hong Kong, Kaohsiung, Taichung, Keelung, Tokyo, Yokohama, Nagoya and Yokkaichi. | | |
